Perching in the crevices of my mountainside cavern, I've been pondering ways to bring joy and happiness to the community of Yale Record Alums. For those of you who missed our Fireside chat, I'm including a recording of our chat with Adam Chase here.

I realized that many of you haven't seen the updates that the currentYale Record students have been sharing in my hoot. I've included the one from our previous email below. Also, at the bottom of these emails, I've been hooting some Yale Record historical gems like the recent "Welcome to Yale Party." So scroll away!

While the pandemic has many many problems, we've been able to pull off some fun virtual Yale Record Game Nights with students and alums. So come on November 18th at 8PM to play Scategories and other clever games with us.

An Update from the Chair of the Yale Record

Greetings Owls Much Older Than Me!
 
The Record's been off to a great start this year! The incoming class was greeted by our First-Year Issue, which was a huge hit! Over 300 students signed up at the extracurricular bazaar, and more than 100 of them attended our first meeting!! Even though we had to have the first few meetings of the year outside in the SSS Courtyard, and even though we had to buy a bullhorn so everyone could hear us, it was a huge improvement from Zoom! For many members, it was their first time meeting everyone in person. 
 
Even after all the hubbub of the beginning of the year, we have dozens of new faces joining us in L.C. every Monday. Of course, it feels good to be back in good old L.C., the Record's stomping ground in the last few years. Jokes land much better when everyone's close, and our Managing Editors can finally conduct their brainstorms on chalkboards again. And we've been keeping our new members busy! They were a huge help in writing the Family Values Issue, and they've been helping put together pranks and online posts every week at the free-for-all we call Happy Fun Time. 
 
The Record just hosted its first College Tea of the year with Demetri Martin (M.C.ed by our very own Will Cramer). We all had a fantastic conversation about being a student at Yale, comedy, and life. And speaking of performing comedy, The Cucumber (the Record's stand-up branch) just hosted its first show of the year in the Davenport theater. We had older Recordians, friends of the Record, and first-years all perform, almost all of them for the first time, and precisely all of them very funny. I think we really scratched an itch, too. The theater filled as soon as doors opened, and we had to turn away a line going out the door.
 
We also threw a giant bash welcoming Cami Donadio to Yale. Don't know who Cami Donadio is? We didn't either. For the last 3 years, The Record celebrated our 3rd annual "Welcome to Yale!" party where throw a party for a random first year. To learn more about this new tradition and its history, scroll down to the bottom of this email.

Finally, we're about to release our Therapy Issue! So keep your eyes peeled for that. Long story short—we're all very excited to be back in person and for the year ahead!

More About the "Welcome to Yale!" Party

In the last issue of humble Hoot, we talked about The Welcome to Yale Party. We realized that we couldn't make all 1,100 First-Years feel welcome, but we could make one First-Year feel extremely welcomed? And so, we did.
 
We told you about Zuri's party in the last issue but there's more! 

The next year we wanted to take it to the next level with The Ben Chen Party. We printed out dozens of like 2ft by 3ft posters on glossy paper with Ben Chen’s photos and Instagram posts. We continued the themed drinks, including the Ben 10 Chen, 1 part Dubra and 10 parts water. The backyard and inside were packed, people were lined up down the street and trying to get in by climbing the fence, and we had the Recordians doing door duty send people away, especially if they asked “what frat is this.” At the party’s height, we had Ben make a speech and the crowd went wild with people on the roof and carrying Ben through the crowd. 

Now it's 2021. After a year of no parties, we needed this party to make its return. It had become a Yale tradition! No class on campus remembered a time before The Record's Welcome to Yale parties. This year we settled on Cami Donadio after discovering her Instagram username was @lizardclubpresident and a Freshman Counselor's assessment that “Of any first year I've met I think she is most able to roll with the punches of jokes about her. She just seems a bit more self-aware than most first years. 

The party was even bigger than the Ben Chen one—despite some rain, we had over 300 show up. Cami of course had a great time, signing autographs on everyone’s shirts. The party had such an effect on some first years that some asked the next weekend “if the record is throwing down tonight.”
