151st Birthday Party Recap + Video — The Yale Record Corporation

Owls Young and Old,

We had a great party on Saturday, April 6th. We had alums of all ages. Thanks to everyone who could join us, including Mike Gerber '91, Dave Etkin '94, Seth Oltman '97, David Chernicoff '07, David Litt '08, Mike Thornton '09, Tessa Williams '10, Jack Newsham '12, Sydney Shea '12, and Cleo Rose '24. We also had a special guest, Laura Fox, from the American Bystander who advised the students. We celebrated the first Record couple to be married and renewed our vows to keep the Record healthy for the next 150 years.

Here's a summary of our awardees for this year:

Grossman: Sophie Spaner '25. For consistent excellence in The Record's art, through their covers, cartoons, and support, Sophie Spaner delights us all with various styles, weaving together elements of humor and visual artistry to create works that drip with humor and captivate the viewer. Sophie's contributions have become a cornerstone of The Record's identity, enriching the publication with their creativity.
Morrison: Ainslee Garcia '27 for "Cubist Courtroom Sketch Artist. Ainslee Garcia's rendition of a classic courtroom sketch cleverly combines artistic style and humor in a creative drawing, breathing whimsy and absurdity into the scene. 24-Hour Issue, February 2024.
Kloot: Emmitt Thulin '25. With unwavering commitment and creativity, Emmitt Thulin has left an indelible mark on our institution. His remarkable contributions have expanded The Record's wit and humor and have also cultivated a culture of kindness, camaraderie, and care. Emmitt's contributions has indisputably elevated the comedic and cultural standards of The Record.
Bentley: Tara Bhat '25 for "Phillip Littleton's Yale Application". On the struggles of being a boy with a very strong pinky fingers, how difficult it is be be muscular, and what it's like for your Physical Education Professor to think that you look like a beautiful stallion. First Year Issue, September 2023.

Memories of the Record

In each newsletter, we will be highlighting a memory from the Yale Record history. Please send your Record memories to robert@schlaff.com and I’ll add them here. We’ll also be collecting them into a history of the Yale Record. This memory comes from Jack Newsham 2012.

When I was a sophomore, Michelle Taylor thought that fellow Record sophomore Sydney Shea and I would be a good couple. So she and Mitchell Nobel poured us strong drinks and left us alone to “clean the Record office.” And that’s what we did. But a couple of weeks later we started dating. Then a few short years later we were married. Thank you Old Owl!

Notes from Campus

The students have an awesome new Big 4. We met them in person on April 6th and we are very excited about what's in store for The Record next year. They are:

Chair: Amelia Herrmann. Hi! My name is Amelia Herrmann, and I’m a rising junior majoring in Chemical Engineering. I’m from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I’m thrilled to be serving as Chair and contributing to the legacy of the Record. Outside of the Record, I am also involved in sketch comedy and stand up as a leader of the Odd Ducks and a frequent Cucumber performer. Outside of the sphere of comedy, I also conduct research on PFAS removal and biomedical implants. Outside of the outside, I obsess over countless hours of the countless iterations of Alex Horne’s Taskmaster.
EIC: Lizzie Conklin. Lizzie Conklin is from Chester Springs, Pennsylvania. She is a junior studying Art and the History of Art. She writes and edits for the YDN, and is the incoming editor in chief of the Record. She makes films, paintings, songs, and popcorn. In the last year, she has grown an inch taller.
OEIC: Debbie Lilly. Hi! I’m Debbie Lilly, a rising junior majoring in computer science. I’m from the Boston area but currently reside in the luxurious Benjamin Franklin College. I’m thrilled to take on the role of Online Editor-in-Chief and help The Record keep up with the times by embracing the digital age! Outside of The Record, I spend my time leading outdoor orientation trips, working in the Franklin Buttery, and wishing I were at a Record meeting.
Publisher: Erita Chen. I'm Erita Chen, a rising junior from JE majoring in history. I first became interested in comedy while watching late-night talk show marathons in middle school, and I joined the Record because it was such a welcoming, inclusive community for learning how to write funny. I was previously one of the Record's design editors, and I'm so excited to contribute even more as its publisher! Outside of the Record, I'm artistic director for the Yale Ballet Company, as well as a performer for the Yale Dance Lab, the Cucumber, and various theatre shows.
