Stand-Up Night and "Hello, Fall Term"

Old Owls,

I wanted to give you a hoot to celebrate the beginning of the school year…which means a new year for The Yale Record! As the students bring humor to the Yale campus, we at the Yale Record Corporation are here to bring that humorous spirit to you alums. Here’s some news, updates, and Record lore to bring back memories of old Yale.

Also, in exciting news, we’re bringing on some help at the YRC, to keep things running strong and manage our new online store!

Stand-Up Night at the Yale Club – September 20th

Last year’s Stand-Up Night at our beloved outpost in NYC.

Join us for a night of laughter and camaraderie at The Yale Club of New York! On September 20th at 8 PM, our talented students will take the stage for the 5th Yale Record Stand-Up Night at The Yale Club. Enjoy complimentary wine and cheese at 7:30 PM, and reconnect with fellow alums.

After the show, we’ll head to the best pizza in New York at John’s Times Square. It’s a wonderful night, and space is limited— RSVP here to secure your spot!

Say Hello to the Big Four!

Every year is special at The Record, but this one’s a little more so—we are making history with our first all-female Big Four! Please join us in welcoming:

  • Amelia Herrmann ‘26 – Chair

  • Lizzie Conklin ‘25 – Editor-in-Chief

  • Erita Chen ‘26– Publisher

  • Debbie Lilly ‘26 – Online Editor-in-Chief

Publisher Erita asked us to pass along this heartfelt message: “We’re all extremely grateful to the alums for all the support and guidance you’ve all given us!” Erita, it’s our pleasure. These talented women will have their hands full—their staff is over 100 students! YRC will be there with support, money, and expertise to make sure they and their Board have a great Record experience.

Old Owl Remembers: The Tale of TEA

The TEA Club’s booth at the Freshman Activities Bazaar, where hijinks happen.

One of The Record’s most beloved and enduring new traditions is the fictional TEA Club. Each year, this "club" gets its own booth at the Freshman Activities Bazaar, confusing administrators and delighting new students.

David Chernicoff ‘07 began the thing: "I had registered the Yale Tea Club with the Dean's Office during my freshman and sophomore years, and the Tea Club was an actual thing that met; Gordon Jenkins '07 (Managing Editor ‘06) and I served tea and hung out with people. Then we stopped junior year but I kept the registration open so I could sign up for an extra table at the Bazaar, and each year we'd come up with a different acronym for TEA, make a few parody pamphlets, and have a fun time of it."

Jack Newsham ‘14 fondly recalls: “I think it was my sophomore year that it was ‘Twerking for Endangered Animals.’ I might have been the second-least embarrassing twerker, which is not saying much. It was a great way to have fun and help us find our people.”

Here are some of the memorable acronyms for TEA over the years:

The noble tradition of T.E.A. will continue to amuse and bewilder each new class, for as long as Yalies use acronyms.
