Gala Recap + Yale Record Stand Up Comedy Show (September 22nd)

Old Owls,

I'm Rob Schlaff, the new president of the YRC. Like many of you, the Record holds a special place in my heart. It has always been a place that takes the wonderful creativity of Yale students and helps them to punch up and not down. Over the last  22 years, we've built out an organization that makes sure the students will never go out of business. We've created annual events like the Yale Record Awards Lunch and the Stand Up show at the Yale Club of New York. And most recently we pulled off the 150th anniversary gala thanks to our very committed students.

At Yale, you put a lot of work into The Record. Whether you spent the night awake to pull tougher a 24-hour issue or worked to pull the financials together with dental floss and bubble gum, you’ve earned your status as a Record alum. So use it. Join us at our events, in person and online, lead something that you’re passionate about, and help keep The Record this wonderfully fun institution.

What do you want the YRC to be? What do you want to lead or be a part of? If you have an idea you’d like to spearhead, or even if you’d just like to join Adrian Bonenberger, Liz Kingsley, and me on monthly calls with students, just give me a shout.

Yale Record Stand Up. Friday September 22nd, Yale Club of New York

Please join us on September 22nd at the Yale Club of New York for our 5th Annual (if you skip Covid) Yale Record Stand-Up Show. We will be bringing in the best and brightest stand ups from New Haven to perform at the Yale Club of New York. It's a wonderful time to meet up with old Record friends, meet some new ones, and see a surprisingly good comedy show.

Record Gala Recap

On April 15, over 140 alumni and students gathered at the Omni in New Haven to celebrate the first 150 years of the world’s oldest college humor magazine. It was truly a night to remember, with lots of conviviality and remarks by Adriana Golden ‘24, Michael Gerber ‘91, outgoing YRC President Michael Thornton ‘09, and incoming President Rob Schlaff ‘99. The inaugural endowed Mark P. O’Donnell Award for Excellence in Teaching was given to Jennifer Finney Boylan, professor, bestselling author and former columnist for the New York Times. Cartoonist, writer and proprietress of St. Nell’s Humor Residency for Ladies Emily Flake was awarded a special Yale Record 150th Prize. In addition, V. Cullum Rogers was made an honorary alumnus in recognition of his donation of a collection of over 4,000 college and professional humor magazines and parodies to the Yale Record; this is the largest such collection in the world, and will be held in New Haven for the use of scholars. And finally, we honored Professor Jay Gitlin ‘71 with honorary alum status, for his support of Yale student history, of which The Record has been such a large part. A small commemorative book is being produced, and will be available in the fall.
