After our successful Virtual Stand Up show at the Yale Club of New York, we decided to do it again. Or more specifically, Hank Michael O.O. '93 has decided to do it again. Hank is hosting a Yale Record Virtual Stand Up Event on April 28th at 7:30. It's sponsored by the New England Society of Brooklyn but he's graciously invited Yale Record Alums as well. So come and see some of the best current and former Yale comics ply their trade on Zoom. 

Coming Up: A Memorial Day Event on Military Humor

If you liked Catch-22—and who didn't like Catch-22—this is the event for you. Join The Yale Record for a chat with veterans Francis Horton and Nate Bethea of the "What a Hell of a Way to Die" podcast for a talk about military humor, and the best way to honor American soldiers who struggled on behalf of this egalitarian and democratic project of which we're all a part. Horton and Bethea will explain guardrails for military humor in the 21st century, as well as their own relationship to it.

As you can imagine, the COVID-19 pandemic has dried up the already anemic New Haven ad market, hindered staff recruitment, and made it impossible for The Yale Record staff to meet in person. A Note from the Student Editor-in-Chief

Kids today? They can’t get enough of their smartphones and internet websites. That (and the fact that we're not allowed out of our rooms) is why we’ve been focusing on growing our online presence—producing original digital content and plugging our print issues. In the past month, we’ve almost doubled our Instagram following (over 2,000 followers for the first time) and grown our Twitter presence significantly. Our recent Instagram post on the Class of 2025 was our most successful post to date and was shared over 600 times.

Print issues have continued as usual, with the unfortunate caveat that they’re only available on our website. We've learned that leaving printed issues in deserted common rooms and outside empty dining halls is not a winning business model. At the end of the year, we’ll be printing a limited set of physical copies. Soon to be released are the Class Warfare Issue and the 2021 24-Hour Issue, and we’ll be publishing our final project of the year, the Record Poetry Book, in mid-May. 

Beyond that, we’re still doing what the Record does best: shouting nonsense into the void. Here’s a selection of some of our recent online pieces and digital magazines:

A Yale Record Prank

In 2015, the Yale Record hosted a mock protest on Broadway. The students called for Yale administrators to bring a second Kiko Milano store. “When we heard that Yale had decided to replace the affordable food store up on Broadway with Kiko Milano and Emporium DNA, we were really excited to have the chance to buy more luxury products at Yale because that was really hard before,” Gertler said.

Yale Record History

Robert C Osborne, '28 served as Art Editor and Chairman of The Yale Record. He taught art at Hotchkiss and his illustrations were featured in Fortune, Harpers, Life, Esquire, and his numerous books. His biggest legacy might be his character Dilbert the Pilot which became the namesake of Scott Adam's Dilbert.
