More on Wednesday's Show

After our successful Virtual Stand Up show at the Yale Club of New York, we decided to do it again. Or more specifically, Hank Michael O.O. '93 has decided to do it again. Hank is hosting a Yale Record Virtual Stand Up Event on April 28th at 7:30. It's sponsored by the New England Society of Brooklyn but he's graciously invited Yale Record Alums as well. So come and see some of the best current and former Yale comics ply their trade on Zoom.

Coming Up: A Memorial Day Event on Military Humor

If you liked Catch-22—and who didn't like Catch-22—this is the event for you. Join The Yale Record for a chat with veterans Francis Horton and Nate Bethea of the "What a Hell of a Way to Die" podcast for a talk about military humor, and the best way to honor American soldiers who struggled on behalf of this egalitarian and democratic project of which we're all a part. Horton and Bethea will explain guardrails for military humor in the 21st century, as well as their own relationship to it.

Thank You for Donating

For those of you who could donate this year, thank you for giving to the YRC in these difficult times. As you can imagine, the COVID-19 pandemic has dried up the already anemic New Haven ad market, hindered staff recruitment, and made it impossible for The Yale Record staff to meet in person. Without alumni support, these impacts could have hindered the students for years. Thank you for coming through with your support this year.

In addition to directly supporting the student magazine, the YRC also preserves The Yale Record archives, administers prizes, and organizes alumni gatherings (including digital events).

If you haven't donated recently, or if you'd like to up your pledge, please Give a Hoot and support The Yale Record at https://www.yalerecordcorporation.org/donate where you can make a one-time or recurring donation.

A Note from the Student Editor-in-Chief

Kids today? They can’t get enough of their smartphones and internet websites. That (and the fact that we're not allowed out of our rooms) is why we’ve been focusing on growing our online presence—producing original digital content and plugging our print issues. In the past month, we’ve almost doubled our Instagram following (over 2,000 followers for the first time) and grown our Twitter presence significantly. Our recent Instagram post on the Class of 2025 was our most successful post to date and was shared over 600 times.

Print issues have continued as usual, with the unfortunate caveat that they’re only available on our website. We've learned that leaving printed issues in deserted common rooms and outside empty dining halls is not a winning business model. At the end of the year, we’ll be printing a limited set of physical copies. Soon to be released are the Class Warfare Issue and the 2021 24-Hour Issue, and we’ll be publishing our final project of the year, the Record Poetry Book, in mid-May.

Beyond that, we’re still doing what the Record does best: shouting nonsense into the void. Here’s a selection of some of our recent online pieces and digital magazines:

A Yale Record Prank

In 2015, the Yale Record hosted a mock protest on Broadway. The students called for Yale administrators to bring a second Kiko Milano store. “When we heard that Yale had decided to replace the affordable food store up on Broadway with Kiko Milano and Emporium DNA, we were really excited to have the chance to buy more luxury products at Yale because that was really hard before,” Gertler said.

Yale Record History

Robert C Osborne, '28 served as Art Editor and Chairman of The Yale Record. He taught art at Hotchkiss and his illustrations were featured in Fortune, Harpers, Life, Esquire, and his numerous books. His biggest legacy might be his character Dilbert the Pilot which became the namesake of Scott Adam's Dilbert.

Thank you for your help and we look forward to hearing from you soon!

Owls of the World,

Here's a ray of light for all of you who have been in lockdown in a bunker for the last few years. The Yale Record is having a Masters Tea! Sign up for the event here on Facebook. We expect a strong response so sign up soon. We will be sharing the Zoom details before the event. If you don't have Facebook, email me at robert@schlaff.com and I'll get you the information for the Zoom.

If you're looking for more Yale Record Humor, take a look at their most recent issues:

The Yale Record Coins the Word Hot Dog

In the late 1800s, there was no common word for a warm sausage in a bun. The Yale Record wouldn't stand for this, creating the term "hot dog" that we now know and love. When I was on the magazine in 1998 we bit into the history of The Yale Record's relationship to the Hot Dog.

Thank you for your help and we look forward to hearing from you soon!

Upcoming Alumni Issue – Please Join Us

The Yale Record’s 150th anniversary is coming up and we want to do something special. We are creating a special anniversary issue of The Yale Record for the Holidays of 2021. We want it to be a fun professional collaboration. It’ll look like Michael Gerber’s (OO ’91) American Bystander Holiday Issue which you can view here. But we need your help. We’re looking for writers, artists, designers, or anyone who would like to be part of this endeavor. Email robert@schlaff.com if you’re interested.

The COVID -19 pandemic has dried up the already anemic New Haven ad market, hindered staff recruitment, and made it impossible for The Record staff to meet in person. Without alumni support, these impacts could hinder the students for years. Our alumni-funded and managed endowment is an essential safety net.

To help the students meet these challenges, the YRC has agreed to double the student board’s stipend for 2020-2021. We feel confident in making this pledge due to the tremendous support from our alumni through the years.

In addition to directly supporting the student magazine, the YRC also preserves The Yale Record archives, administers prizes, and organizes alumni gatherings (including digital events).

Yale Record Zoom With River Clegg, Late Show At Stephen Colbert Writer

Dear Owls,

In this age of owl pandemic, we’ve had to move our traditional events to a more virtual mode. We’re excited to bring the first of these events to you at 7PM on June 16th, featuring a conversation with River Clegg.

We will also be treated to the comedy stylings of Adam Chase ’19, one of the top comics of the NYC virtual comic club scene.

Yale Awards Weekend 2019

Join us for the Yale Record's Award Lunch and Reunion Dinner

Fellow Owls,

We are excited to expand our Annual Yale Record Awards Lunch to also include a Reunion Dinner. This year, we'll be dragging Mike Gerber '91 all the way from LA to join us (if Elon Musk had delivered on his national hyperloop ponzi scheme, we could've used magnets to zoom him over but instead Mike will be flying economy). Mike doesn't get out East much and would love to see all his old Record friends. As many of you know, Mike was essential in the reestablishment of The Record, and knows more than anyone should about its history; he and Don Watson '59 will be on hand to answer questions, spread cheer, and overhear embarrassing anecdotes for inclusion in The Record's 150 year anniversary book in 2022. Please join us for the:
